GALLERYSKE, New Delhi is pleased to present MIND THE GAP, the debut solo exhibition by Hyderabad-based artist Dia Mehta Bhupal. Bhupal’s practice examines the contemporary status of photographic images, the liminal possibility of introspection, and hidden structures of meaning in the mundane.

The artist has developed a unique approach to photography. She make images of rooms and other spaces that appear at once both strange and familiar. In fact, her photographs are of three dimensional sets, mostly life size, painstakingly constructed from magazines, newspaper and cardboard. Each piece of paper is cut, rolled and glued into many layers; a process taking up to two years for her more complex sculptures.

At first sight, the architectural subjects represented by Bhupal’s photographs seem devoid of human presence but they relate to social sites where public and private moments often uncanni- ly coexist. Close inspection also reveals the paper’s intricate detail. The artist says, “Each roll comes with its own text to create myriad stories from different cultures, time periods and genres.”

Although people are figuratively absent, what remains are images which become models of the memory, experience, and contemplation of these moments. In a world saturated with manipulat- ed or mediated images, MIND THE GAP re-evaluates the potential of the photographic medi- um. Bhupal’s work does not simply depict the world around her but actively participates in its construction.

She received her education at Parsons School of Design, New York (2003-2006) and Central and Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London (2002 – 2003). The artist lives and works in Hyderabad, India.
